Erin Ferree, founder of elf design, helps small businesses stand out from their competition so that they can connect with their best customers. She does this by working with business owners to define their brands, and then using that definition to create logos, marketing materials and websites that show how they shine. She also believes that all of a business's brand materials should be not just pretty, but also designed effectively and strategically. This produces a winning combination of materials that communicate visually, look stunning and are designed effectively, which help her clients reach their target audiences.
She believes that:
- Clients should have direct access to communicate with their designer — there should be no account managers or middle men.
- That part of a brand designer's job is to help a business owner get some clarity around their business's structure and strategy, and to help them communicate those through the brand.
- Designers should act as a artistic translator for the entrepreneur — transforming the things they say about their business (their brand) into what they want to see (their brand identity) and that their clients will remember.
- That every component of a designed piece should communicate the business's brand definition to their target audience.
- That clients should be offered many choices, so that their final logo and materials can be tailored to fit their objectives, personality and taste.
- And that all of a company's marketing materials should be consistently designed so they can maximize the impact they have on the brand — and the memorability they'll have for the customer.
She writes profusely about design, branding and marketing, and distributes her thoughts on these topics through her eBooks, her blog at www.not-just-pretty.com, and in free articles in her newsletter and on her website, because she wants to help entrepreneurs make their brands effective.
Hundreds of small business owners across the US, Canada, and around the world (she's worked with clients in Turkey, New Zealand and England) have relied on Erin to create graphics that support their brands.
Among Erin's talents are the unusual combination of artistic vision and technical acumen — her Graphic Design education at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo included forays into fine arts, technical illustration and computer programming. That means Erin is equally comfortable coding a website and designing one.
When she's not busy designing or coding, writing about branding, or running elf design, Erin likes to pursue some other creative outlets such as painting, sewing, ceramics, and cooking. She's an avid reader, always looking for another good author to mow through. She's a bit ashamed to admit that she's recently given in and joined a bowling league. And, she spends lots of time at home with her husband, Ray, Stanley the corgi and her 2 bunnies, Mister and Misses.
Erin has been cooking up fresh designs as elf design's Lead Designer since 1996.
Erin served as the Director of Membership for Women in Consulting in 2006.
